Combel la Serre as a domaine was founded in 2005, however the estate goes back generations in the family of current winemaker and owner Julien Ilbert. Julien started his transition in to taking the reigns for the family legacy in 1998, at a stage where his father was growing fruit of serious quality but was selling the fruit on to the local co-op. Julien then took up the momentous task of converting the vineyards over to full organics. He continues to be one of the most important Cahors producers in the region today.
The 2016 Estate Malbec is testament to the love, care and personality that this family have brought to their vineyards. Whilst Julien puts focus on modern agricultural practices the wines he makes present incredibly classically, showing their respect for the history of the estate. It's Malbec in a silk dress, elegant yet forthright. Blue fruited yet earthen in it's own lovely way. Serious old world juice that can still be charming as hell.
