Sasanokawa was actually one of the major players in Japanese whisky (alongside Nikka and Suntory) until the 1980s when sales began to decline. Unfortunately for them, just as Japanese whisky was starting to become the phenomenon it is now, disaster struck - in 2011 the Fukushima nuclear disaster happened and being less than 70 kilometres away, Sasanokawa lost almost all of their whisky stock. They are, rightly, proud of their history and have a reputation to protect, so while their whisky is currently a world blend you can be certain that the cask selection and blending prowess are top of the line.
The nose here is all toffee and bananas, but it is cherries, vanilla and a surprising, soft peat on the palette. Sitting at 48%, the higher ABV really helps the creamy mouthfeel and structure. Beautifully balanced and just very darn drinkable!
